Philosophy/Purpose

All students are required to fulfill community service hours each year while attending SJCH.  The purpose of this requirement is to give the students an opportunity to exercise the values of Jesus Christ as exemplified by St. Joseph the Worker.  Service is a distinguishing part of the Christian life.  “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”  (John 13:15)

All students who are entering at Grade 9 are expected to have 110 hours of service documented and on file in the Campus Ministry Office at the time of graduation. The hours required will be adjusted proportionately for a student admitted after their first semester of ninth grade.

Students are required to have the following hours documented and on file in the Campus Ministry office by the following dates for the 2008/2009 school year and will count towards their semester finals grade (finals consist of written exam 100 pts and the service component figures in at 1 pt. per hour of service required):

Freshman - 20 hours

  • 10 hours completed and documented by Dec.8th, 2008

  • 10 hours completed and documented by May 8th, 2009
  • ***110 hours required for graduation 2012
  • 1st Semester 110 pt final
  • 2nd Semester 110 pt final

Sophomores - 25 hours

  • 13 hours completed and documented by Dec. 8th, 2008
  • 12 hours completed and documented by May 8th, 2009
  • ***110 hours required for graduation 2011
  • 1st Semester 113 pt final
  • 2nd Semester 112 pt final

Juniors - 30 hours

  • 15 hours completed and documented by Dec. 8th, 2008
  • 15 hours completed and documented by May 8th, 2009
  • ***110 hours required for graduation 2010
  • 1st Semester 115 pt final
  • 2nd Semester 115 pt final

Seniors - 35 hours

  • 18 hours completed and documented by Dec. 8th, 2008.
  • 17 hours completed and documented by May 1st, 2009
  • ***110 hours required for graduation 2009
  • 1st Semester 118 pt final
  • 2nd Semester 117 pt final

For Example:    If a Jr. students receives 85/100 pts on the written exam and 15/15 pts. for the service component, the students final exam score is 100/115 = 87% B+

Procedure

Students may pick up Community Service forms outside of Mrs. Beger’s office (located in the gym). Original forms must be filled out in its entirety before any hours will/can be credited.  No other forms may be substituted.  A log sheet must be attached for services which are on going, ie. serving at church for a month, working on a weekly basis at the animal shelter.  When in doubt ask!

Once service hours are completed and the form(s) are filled out in their entirety, all forms are to be placed in the COMPLETED box outside of Mrs. Beger’s office. Forms must be turned in no later than 2 weeks after service has been completed or by the semester due dates whichever comes first.

Forms will be placed in the students individual community service files and may be reviewed by the students and/or parents throughout the year. The Counselors office will receive a list of updated hours for each student at the beginning of the school year for the SEOP meetings and at the end of each quarter.
